The Guild Education Committee is running another of its very popular Listening Skills courses, on Saturday 12 October, based at Lockerley. This is a day for ringers at all levels and covers all sorts of things you may not have tried before in order to help you listen to the bells – or, more precisely, to interpret what you are hearing. It is a non-competitive day where you can have fun with ringers from across the Guild, learning quite a lot in the process, involving listening exercises, hand-bells, ringing exercises, and much more; you do not need to be an expert. And we also include a hot lunch!
A poster and application form (both Word and pdf versions) are available on the links below, so please talk about it amongst your friends and send in your applications.
As always – any queries, let me know.

On Sunday 15th July a brother and sister aged 11 and 4 were baptised at St John’s Lockerley. The parents asked the vicar Rev James Pitkin if it was possible for the children to visit the bell chamber to see the bellringers after the service and of course the answer was yes. There were quite a few children attending the baptism and they visited the tower in small groups. Climbing the spiral stairs was their first adventure.
They were shown a bell being rung up and when the bell’s rope was tied they could see that it looked just the same as a bell that was down, showing how dangerous it could be to touch a bell rope in any tower they might visit if the bell ropes were in reach.
After the bell had been rung down all the children were encouraged to chime the treble and one or two of the dads also had a go at chiming the tenor.
They all seemed to have enjoyed their visit and said that it had been a very memorable baptism day.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Test Valley Borough Council visited Lockerley Church Tower on Sunday 8 July for an hour to see a demonstration of ringing. The visit was held during a tower open day in association with Romsey Arts Festival and followed an invitation from the Lockerley ringers. As well as seeing demonstrations of ringing the Mayor had a go himself, starting off by chiming and progressing to ringing both strokes on his own (a very impressive achievement).

With Grandsire Doubles and Triples behind us**, the Education Committee is turning its attention to the Listening Skills course on Saturday 8th April, based at Lockerley. This is a full-day course, including lunch, and covers all sorts of different things which ringers may not have tried (in addition to ringing). It is for ALL abilities, including relative beginners, and is a lot of fun. Expect the unexpected! **click to read a review of the Grandsire course
If you, or others within your tower, are still thinking about this, could I just remind you that the closing date for the receipt of applications is Wednesday 22nd March – not very far away! – and places are already three-quarters full. Courses so far this year have all been over-subscribed, resulting in waiting lists, so if you think this would be of interest to you or your fellow-ringers could I suggest you send in your applications a.s.a.p. In case they have been mislaid, further copies (both Word and pdf versions) of the poster and application form are attached.
Any queries before you take the plunge – do please give me a call or email me (see below)

If you haven’t tried this before – this is one for you!
Attached are posters and application forms (both Word and pdf versions) for the Education Committee’s day on Listening Skills, based at Lockerley & East Dean Memorial Hall on Saturday 8th April 2017.
This is specifically aimed at helping ringers to listen, to interpret what they are hearing, and to adjust their ringing accordingly. It is a designed to be fun as well as informative and will cover a range of different exercises and activities including some practical ringing. You will see that it is for ringers of all levels, even relative beginners, so if you haven’t joined an Education Day before, this is one where you will meet others “on a level playing field” and our aim is that, whilst we have experts on hand to help and guide you, you should never find yourself feeling out of your depth. And this is a day when the Education Committee also provides a hot lunch in the middle of the day!
There has been a high demand for places on Education Days so far this year – so if this is of interest you need to get your application in early.
As always, I’m more than happy to answer any questions, either by email, or by ‘phone on 01962 886939.

The Lockerley and East Tytherley ringers were joined by West Tytherley ringers and a few visitors for a very enjoyable skittles evening on Maundy Thursday. Carol Higgins organised the evening, Rob Churchill came first in the skittles competition, and Joy Scanlan won the knock-out competition.
In visiting Minehead over the week-end Bren and I were just placed on ropes, without being told what we were ringing, as is Andrew’s way.
We then rang plain courses of PB10 and Grandsire Carters followed by Bren inside to Stedman Caters with me on the tenor (the Stedman may not be a first as we have rung it on the course at Hursley!).

On Saturday 24th October Eling ringers had their first Outing in quite a few years. Organised by yours truly, for the benefit of our newer ringers to give them experience ringing at different towers. A good day out apart from the weather!
