On Saturday June 10th, ringers from Wickham rang in a peal of mixed doubles at St Nicholas, Wickham, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the casting of the bells, to open the Wickham Fete and to welcome the new Rector, Revd Jane Isaac, to the benefice.
Two Wickham ringers, Greg Painter and Dave Pelley, scored their first peal. The conductor was Edd Colliss.
Revd Isaac said “Thank you everyone…your ringing was appreciated by so many people this afternoon, several of whom told me how much they enjoyed the sound of the bells”
The band is planning to clean the tower then go to the pub.

Heads up that the next district practice will be Thursday November 10th, and following on from the dizzy heights of Portsmouth cathedral will be in lil ol’ Wickham. All welcome, although I’m not sure we have room for 40. We hope to provide refreshments including some of Greg’s delicious home made cakes.
Wickham practice is cancelled on Thursday October 6th as it clashes with the District Practice at Portsmouth Cathedral.
Unfortunately the special doubles practice at Wickham on Thursday 8th Sept has been cancelled. We hope to reschedule it, in the meantime there will still be a normal practice at Wickham for anyone wishing to attend.
Parking for about 12 cars is available behind the church (entrance in Southwick Road B2177)
The ringers enter by the main door (with the fancy light above!) and access to the ringing chamber is up a short flight of wooden stairs and through the trap door.
The ringing chamber is adjacent to a spacious gallery where there is room to wait between touches.
On Thursday night ringers from Shedfield, Titchfield, Purbrook, Alverstoke, Catherington and Christchurch Priory joined the Wickham band for a themed doubles practice.
Methods rung included St Simon’s bob, Stedman and a 120 of the plain bob doubles variation Kennington.
The next themed practice will be Thursday 8th September, to attempt touches of St. Simon’s bob and the Reverse Canterbury variation Southrepps. All ringers welcome to come along on the night.
Wickham is holding a special Doubles practice on Thursday 11th August at 7.30. We are hoping to make this special practice a regular feature, in order to give ringers an opportunity to try some less commonly-rung Doubles methods and variations.
All ringers welcome as we will be ringing everything from Plain Hunt to Stedman. August’s special method and method variation will be St Simon’s Bob and Kennington. If time allows we will ring some other variations (see picture for details)
If you would like to support Wickham Ringers, please come along. We would be happy to see you. Parking is available behind the church (entrance in Southwick Road B2177)
There will be no practice at Wickham on Thursday 21st July owing to annual holidays. If anyone is free to ring Sunday morning July 24th, please do come along. Service ringing starts at 9.20AM.
Wickham ringers would like to extend an invitation to the first of our monthly special Doubles practices, to be held on Thursday 11th August at 7.30.
If you would like to come and support Wickham Ringers, please contact Paul Reynolds so we have an idea of numbers.
Here is a pdf of the methods and variations we hope to ring. doubles practice august 2016
Robin Milford Reports from the practice on July 2nd
14 ringers at tonight’s Curdridge practice! 3 family visitors, plus ringers from Curdridge, Botley, Netley, Wickham and Titchfield. We rang call changes, plain hunt triples and major, Grandsire and Stedman triples and Bob doubles. Cambridge on the front six didn’t quite go, though. Thanks to everyone who came – lovely to have all eight going on a Monday night.
There will be no practice at Wickham on 19th May as they will be setting up for the Wickham horse fair, and access is likely to be difficult.
We will be “Ringing for England” at Wickham on Saturday 23rd April from 2-3pm. Anyone wanting to come along would be very welcome. We could do with another inside ringer for PB and/or Grandsire.
Wickham is currently trialling a monthly practice held on a Saturday afternoon, in addition to the normal Thursday evening practices. This is to enable people who are busy during the week to come along. Wickham is fortunate enough to have a simulator for tied bell practice if required.
The Saturday practices are more geared towards less experienced ringers to practise handling skills, for example ringing up and down, in a less pressured environment than a normal practice. Experienced ringers are of course welcome to come and ring or help.
The first Saturday practice will be on the 19th March at 4.30PM. All welcome. Further special practices will be by arrangement depending on uptake and availability. Please contact Paul Reynolds for further information.
The second half of Firsts Fortnight also saw some activity at Wickham. The new tower captain, James Morgan, oversaw his first service ringing on Mothering Sunday.
Lisa Ashforth rang her first quarter peal of Plain Bob Doubles for Evensong on Mothering Sunday.
At practice on Thursday, Pearl Gatfield rang up the treble for the first time and Dave Pelley called the bells into reverse rounds and back.
Dave also treated the ringers to a tune on his bagpipes, definitely a first for Wickham and probably for the Guild as well!
Firsts Fortnight got off to a good start in Wickham tonight. Larry Hunter rang plain hunt from the 2 for the first time, Pearl Gatfield rang plain hunt from the treble for the first time, Paul Reynolds rang plain hunt from the 5 for the first time, and also called the bells into Kings and back, and Greg Painter rang plain bob doubles from the 2 (not quite for the first time but almost without help). We were also delighted to have Simon King pop in for a visit before he goes back to France tomorrow. Simon took the 4 for a touch of Stedman doubles (ringing for the first time since October) and hasn’t lost his touch at all! Hopefully we can add a couple more firsts at Wickham next week.
Lisa Ashforth Reporting
Following the relocation to France of the former tower captain, Simon King, last October, Wickham had been without a tower captain. We are pleased to report that at the tower AGM last Sunday, James Morgan was elected to the position.
Due to the District Practice at Hambledon on Thursday 18th, there will be no practice at Wickham that night.
Sorry to hear the very sad news of Roy Grayson’s death. Roy was a lovely man and always generous with his time and his enthusiasm. He was a great help at Wickham when we were running our summer ringing courses and much liked by the students. The photograph was taken in August 2014 at the end of that year’s course. Roy will be sadly missed.
Roy was Ringing Master at St. John the Baptst Purbrook and very typically was using his skills to help another tower, as he did over time at a number of Portsmouth District Towers.
