Dear All,

Please find attached agenda for next Saturday’s quarterly meeting at Owslebury, and the unconfirmed minutes of our last quarterly meeting, at Houghton, back in August. Please bring to the attention of your members and anyone else you think would like to come along to what will be a grand afternoon out.

Please find also a copy of the poster for the day, in which I have corrected a minor and inconsequential typo.

The venue and the subject of the training part of our meeting is, please note, a change from what we had planned, in consequence of our having only a six-bell tower available to us in the area for the day. We shall be learning and rehearsing our skills in Treble Bob Minor, in the Kent and Oxford variations, Kent in particular being a valuable stepping-stone between plain minor methods and treble bob, including delight and surprise methods. Oxford is always a useful extra string to one’s bow.
Look forward to seeing you next Saturday, best wishes meanwhile,

Bruce – District Secretary

Hope to see you there.

Helen and Roger Thomas

No Places left on Stedman Triples Course

Just a reminder about the Guild Education Committee’s full-day course on Stedman Triples, on Saturday 4th November, based at Milford on Sea.   A number or places have been filled but we still have a few places left and the closing date creeps ever closer.    If this is of interest to you, or if there are colleagues within your tower whom you think would find this interesting and of value to them, perhaps you would give them a gentle nudge to get their applications in a.s.a.p.    A whole day concentrating on just one method may be just what you need!

Hi everyone,

Surprise Royal Practices continue – 4th Sunday of the Month – sign up here!

Hi all,
Firstly many thanks to all those who completed the feedback. It was very useful! What it did show was there was still a strong desire for practices to be continued, so after my summer off I am back to get things running again!
To make these practices as viable as possible, I am going to aim to start again in October, to allow people sufficient notice. I will advertise the next 4 practices, and using a Doodle poll, assess whether they are viable or not. All practices are on the 4th Sunday afternoon of the month. This still seems the best time for most people at present.
Please click the following link to indicate your availability;
The intention for locations would be;
22/10 – Bishopstoke
26/11 – North Stoneham
28/01 – St Mary’s, Southampton
25/02 – Hursley
I will update you towards the end of this month, so please now get signing up. Any comments/suggestion welcome, as always!
Thanks,
Southampton

Report from Cambridge Surprise Minor Practice – Saturday 26th August

Saint Mary the Virgin, Micheldever held a Stedman and Erin doubles practice on Saturday 8 July 2017. The training day was brilliant. Great support from local ringers and an opportunity to meet new people and have some extended quality rope time. Personally this session really helped me consolidate my Stedman learning resulting in me completing a touch of Stedman and completing a plain course of Erin which was a first for me.

On the day I met Deb Baker, and we decided to arrange a training day for Cambridge Surprise Minor. Debs arranged the bells and I looked to gather a team of helpers.

Last Saturday 26th August (bank holiday weekend) two students and nine helpers from across the district undertook Cambridge Surprise Minor simulator practice at Crondall. Initially the students took turns ringing the method before we advanced to having two students in at the same time. The practice culminated in Debs and me ringing three plain courses together, which was a challenge but completed with some guidance on the second and third courses. It was a brilliant three hour practice with the students walking away with much more knowledge and experience than they had started with and I think the helpers had a good time too.

For a bit of fun the practice finished with a round of quacking ducks on the simulator. If you’ve never tried it you should, it was very funny!

Finally thanks goes to Crondall, for the use of the tower. A big thank you to all the helpers for making this practice such a great success and thanks goes to Roy LeMarechal, who kindly acted as tower captain and structured the practice on the day.

Hope to see you there.

Students and Helpers invited to Cambridge Surprise Minor Practice – Crondall, 26th August

Following on from the successful Stedman Doubles practice earlier on in the year at Herriard, Deb Baker and myself are organising a Cambridge Surprise Minor, simulator practice at Crondall on 26th August 2017 from 10:30-13:00.

I’m writing to seek your help to support the students. If this is something you would like to help with please let me know.

We have four student places. If this is a method you would like to learn please get in touch. If the practice is over subscribed we will run another practice in the near future.

I look forward to hearing from you all whether you are a helper or student.

Eversley Surprise Minor Practice (last Weds of month)

The Eversley Surprise Minor practice is held on the last Wednesday of the month, 8pm until 9.30pm. White Hart Pub afterwards.

Invitation to a Surprise Minor Practice at St Mary’s Eversley on Weds July 26th

On Wednesday 28th June we held a very enjoyable Surprise minor practice at St Mary’s church, Eversley (Basingstoke District). The practice was well attended by ringers from the district, our ODG neighbours and by St Mary’s new Curate, the Reverend Rachel Hartland. Rachel hadn’t rung for 15 years and was delighted to join in with some rounds to get her back into ringing! This month’s method was Annable’s London. Cambridge, Norwich, Beverley and Primrose were also rung. The practice gave St Mary’s ringers a chance to practice Treble bob, Treble Bob Hunt and Plain Bob Doubles with the benefits of a strong band. Our thanks to all those who attended.

The Eversley Surprise Minor practice is held on the last Wednesday of the month. The next practice will be on 26th July, 8pm until 9.30pm. White Hart Pub afterwards.

Upcoming Surprise Royal Practices and the future…

Hi all,
Thank you to those who came to the last surprise royal practice. We were fairly thin on the ground, and struggled because of that, however we met and we rang so all was not lost.
A few important points going forward;
For the next few months I am extremely busy, with amongst other things my own wedding! For these reasons I am not in a place to be able to attend a surprise royal practice now myself until September. I am quite happy to organise them if someone else is happy to volunteer to lead them.
Secondly as with any new initiative it is good to regularly stop an assess the progress being made and reassess whether there is still a need for such an initiative. I have no problem in working hard to organise these practices, but if there isn’t the demand for them it is somewhat of a waste. The practice attendance does seem to fluctuate month to month, but more often then not we are on the lighter side of comfortable. However when we are more well attended good progress is often made. It is a difficult place to be in where there is still obviously some desire for such a practice, however the attendance doesn’t always make it a viable idea.
I’ve produced a short survey that I would be grateful if you could complete, it takes just a few minutes – it is a series of questions with two purposes. Firstly to gauge whether there are enough people around for a July/August practice, and secondly to gather some more general feedback to aid in my decision about whether to push on with it, or to shelve it. All feedback is gratefully received, and I will feedback the results in a few weeks time. Note you can answer this survey without being identified if you wish to.
I have opted for a survey like this as it makes keeping all the information together in one place much easier. If the practice is to continue I will start using this to see if enough people are around each month.
Once I’ve had a decent reply to the survey I’ll send out an update regarding July/August and the future of the practice.
Thanks,

Winchester District Stedman/Erin doubles Training, Saturday 8th July a.m.

Surprise Minor Practice – a report from A&P District

The Surprise Minor Practice at Buriton on Saturday 10th was a great success and very well attended.

I was really pleased to get through a touch of Cambridge without too much trouble, but I really should have spent much longer looking at Primrose before giving it a go. Perhaps then I wouldn’t have tried to join the two bits of front work together, as they are in Cambridge, and might even have known which direction I was going right from the start (note to self, don’t only look at the starts of the 2 & 3, you may well end up with the 4). Sorry Roger, you did say that you didn’t want people to only look at it for half an hour before turning up. I promise to do better next time. I hope there is a next time.

We were treated to a demonstration of just how it should be done when the more experienced Surprise Minor ringers caught hold for four spliced Cambridge, Primrose, Norwich and Ipswich, which was so beautifully rung it even merited a ripple of applause.

Thanks Roger for organising this, and to everyone who came. It wouldn’t have been such a success without you.

Valerie
