W&P Guild 200 Club – Latest News

Those of you who have attended the Annual District Meetings held so far this year will be aware that the new 200 Club is now up and running, and I have already received several cheques, standing order form copies or BACS transfer confirmations. More are needed to have a worthwhile amount for the first draw at the Executive Committee meeting on 25th March! Please note that if you told me last year that you would be interested in joining the Club I still need the completed forms giving confirmation of money coming in before I can add you to the list.

Best of luck in the draw!

Winchester and Portsmouth Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers Members 200 Club

wp-200-club

Aim: To support the Training and Development Fund (T & D Fund) (a Designated Fund within the General Fund).

The fund is to support members of the Winchester and Portsmouth Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers especially to support those members under 25. The object of this fund shall be to provide financial assistance by way of grants to individuals and groups incurring expenditure on: the provision of training, attending courses and events, training materials, payment of tutor expenses, educational assets and any other worthy project to enhance and enable the development of a ringer or group of ringers, or the purchase by the Guild of goods or services to assist in the development of a ringer or group of ringers.

Due to legal requirements, only members of the W+P and its towers can be 200 club members.

How do I become a member?

By payment of the sum of £12 per annum paid by Standing Order, Cheque or BACS transfer, a dedicated number for a 12-month period will be allocated.

Draws:

There will be 3 Draws per year drawn on or near the March and November Executive meetings and at the Guild AGM.

½ of the monthly income will go to the T & D Fund and the rest will be accumulated as prize money.

Prizes:

Each draw will pay out the total of the accumulated prize fund broken down in 6 prizes:
1 @ 50%, 1 @ 20%, 2 @ 10% and 2@ 5%.

The percentage will remain constant but the actual prize money will vary dependant on the receipts received between draws.

When will the draws take place?

The first draw will take place at the W + P Executive Committee March meeting with the accumulated Prize money to 31st March 2017. The following draws will take place at the AGM, with accumulated Prize money to 30th June 2017, and the November Executive with accumulated Prize money to 30th November 2017. Continuing draws will be made in a similar pattern.

Can I have multiple numbers?

Yes, you can have multiple numbers – but each one will cost you £12!

New Look for the 200 Club

Many people in the Guild will be aware of the 200 Club that Mark Esbester used to run, and which raised £17,000 for the BRF over the years. That has now been wound up, but I thought that it would be a shame to see it disappear. I would be willing to run a replacement Club but with more of an emphasis on raising money for training and retention rather than bell restoration – though some money could still go to this if required. Various possible uses for the money have been suggested. These include:
  • a new Guild simulator;
  • a portable mini-ring to be used for public displays;
  • a contribution to ART funds;
  • subsidies for members attending courses;
  • publications to be given to learners;
  • provision of publicity material.
I would propose resuming the Club very much along the lines that Mark used, with an annual £12 subscription, one or two draws per year with about 50% of the income used for prizes. If sufficient money comes in Mark suggested a 1st prize of £150, with 2nd prize £100, 3rd & 4th £50, and 6 others of £25 each – total £500.
 If anyone would be interested in joining, or have any comments on the proposal, I would be grateful if you would contact me directly by email using the form below.
Please don’t send any money yet!
I cannot use the previous bank account, so will need to set up a new one and the banks these days make you jump through more hoops than they used to. As with Mark’s club, this is a private fund-raising venture and not an official Guild activity. It would be a ‘private society lottery’ as defined in the Gambling Act 2005; this means that all subscribers would have to be Guild members or on premises used for the conduct of Guild affairs. I assume this would cover tower subscriptions, of which there were some in the previous Club.
 I have seen Mark’s list of members of his Club, but it is now rather out of date and contains mainly postal addresses so I don’t want to use it for this proposal.”

WP Guild 200 Club – now wound up

It seems that some members of the 200 Club did not received their letters earlier in the year from Mark Esbester advising that the club was to be wound up, nor have they been aware of the announcements that the last draw would be made after the Guild Executive last November.

The draw was made as planned and the results are here https://wpbells.org/2015/11/21/200-club-draw-results/
The account that Mark Esbester used for the 200 Club has now been closed, so if you didn’t cancel your standing order, the payment will be returned to your bank.  Please ensure that no future payments are made.
Finally many thanks to Mark for running this club since 1991, and thanks to all those who joined to raise funds for the BRF, nearly £18,000 since it started.
