Challenge 500 & Heritage Open Day Update

We’re really doing well and have now got five towers from our the C&S district taking part. What about your tower? Could you join this national opportunity to get some ringing publicity?

Current towers

  • Brokenhurst
  • Minstead
  • Lyndhurst
  • Fawley
  • Eling

Details about the events are available here at our  Heritage Day Details page and the Heritage Open Days website.

Ringing World National Youth Contest Report

As many of you know, the Ringing World National Youth Contest was at the beginning of last month. Over 24 teams took part in the competition that was based in London. The main tower for the day was St Mary-Le- Bow, which had a lovely ring of twelve as well as lots of pastries and cakes! Our competition piece was rung at St James Garlickhythe where the Royal Jubilee where hung, which were also really lovely bells to ring. The piece itself was good but we didn’t get through to the final.

However, this was not necessarily a bad thing as it meant we could ring in more towers!

There were towers open all over London including, St Martin-in- the-fields (Trafalgar Square), Magnus-the Martyr (Lower Thames Street), Christs Church (Spitalfeild) and St Botolph without (Bishopsgate). It was really good to be able to ring in London, especially as the Bells where so nice to ring and the views from the tower windows were impressive as well!

Surprise Royal Practice Report

Many thanks to all those who supported the practice at Hursley today – despite the warm weather we managed to make some progress and with more practice all of this will get much easier. It is very rewarding that people are now being given the opportunity to ring things like Bristol Royal which would be difficult to find at an average practice night!

Looking forward to next month the potential practice date for August is Sunday 28th August 2016 14:00 – 15:30 and this would be in Southampton (I try and alternate monthly between Southampton and elsewhere).

I suspect being August that lost of people will be away, however as usual if I can get 15 people to confirm they are likely to be able to attend then it will go ahead.

So please let me know by return if you are free and will be hoping to attend.

I will update everyone with the score closer to the time. If we struggle to get 10, as discussed today I will try and organise a quarter peal instead.

As always any comments/suggestions about anything to do with these practices are most welcome.

Many Thanks,

Dan

Remember the Date – C&S District Outing Sat 17th of September

A reminder before the holiday season kicks in that the C&S District outing is scheduled for Saturday the 17th of September.

There’s ringing at seven towers in the city centre between 10.00 and 18.00. We shall walk between the towers, so will be able to use the Park & Ride. More details will be available nearer the time, but please keep the date free if you wish to come

Ringwood Triples Practice – Wed 20th of July

Jut a quick reminder as it’s going to be the third Wednesday of the month, this means it’s triples night at Ringwoood.

If you’re looking for an opportunity to have a go at ringing triples this is a great practice to join, especially as a gentle introduction.  If you’re an experienced triples ringer then we’d really really appreciate your help as well – please.

As with most practices, though the focus is on Triples, there will be opportunities to ring doubles and minor.  Depending on availability there will hopefully be the opportunities to ring Major as well.

Hope to see you there.

Sopley Minor practice, Wednesday 25 May, 7.30pm

Please don’t forget it’s the Sopley minor practice on Wednesday this week!

We are aiming to continue the progress made last month in Plain Bob and Treble Bob Plain Hunt, as well as continuing with Kent TB minor, Little Bob Minor and Cambridge Minor.

We try to have something for everyone, so if you’re just thinking about ringing on 6 bells you can start with plain hunt minor (maybe jumbled up) or Treble Bob Plain Hunt, before trying your hand at Plain Bob. You can move on to the other methods when you feel ready.

We are dependent on more experienced ringers to provide the backbone and experience for these practices, so if you feel you would like to help please come along. We nearly always manage to do something a bit different or more challenging during the evening – and, of course, we want everyone present to feel they’ve had a good, worthwhile evening at the end of the practice.

Hope to see you on Wednesday,

Tim Kettle, Tim Martin, Christopher Smithies

Lymington District Doubles & Minor Practice Wed 11th of May

Just a quick reminder that there’s the monthly doubles practice at Lymington this Wednesday.

This is a great practice if you want to progress your doubles ringing or even calling, and will be ably organised by Colin Butler, one of our Ringing Masters.

There are no special methods currently planned, though we’re likely to be ringing Bob Doubles, Grandsire and probably Stedman. Maybe we can talk Colin into calling some April day even.

You can usually park outside the church on the road, if not, there is plenty of parking behind Marks & Spencers a couple of minutes walk away.

C&S 12 Bell District Practice at Bitterne Park Sat 14th of May

May’s district practice is at Bitterne Park and is also a 12 bell practice.  The method of the month is “all things Grandsire”, so from doubles upwards.

As always don’t think this is not for you, ringing of all capabilities is catered for from rounds and call changes upwards.

Central Council’s PR Committee Looking for Pictures

This has been posted bell ringers Facebook group recently.

The Central Council’s PR Committee is looking to improve the use of pictures in ringing’s public relations.

There are at least two legs to this (and probably other ones that we haven’t thought of):

1) We want to put together a collection of pictures to use in material we produce to promote ringing. We’ll be looking to see what we can find from existing resources (such as, for example, the ‘Post Your Church Bell Pics’ Facebook group) and we’d also like contributions.

So I have today set up a new facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/postyourbellringingpictures/ for any other photos that people might want to share with facebook and potentially be used for publicity.

Photos can also be emailed to me Giles Blundell , and I will shortly be trying to set up a Dropbox account for anyone who wants to send photos that way – please let me know if this would be helpful to you. We won’t be using any pictures from these sources without getting in touch with the people who post them: if nothing else, we may well want to make sure we’ve got the best quality picture, and we’ll also want to make sure that everyone shown is happy for their picture to be used in publicity.

2) We want to do what we can to improve the quality of photos of ringing in stock libraries used by the media. One way to do this is by getting decent pictures of ringing into the libraries. Alamy (http://www.alamy.com/contributor/) seems to be widely used by the media and also seems particularly user-friendly for contributors (who might actually make some money if their professional quality pictures are used in the press). So we would encourage ringers with high quality pictures showing successful 21st century ringing to list their pictures on Alamy – and any other stock photo libraries they think are suitable.

Thanks for your help!

Categories Overview

This is shamelessly cribbed from Ros’s Facebook post.  I’ve put it here so that I can find it.

NEWS or INVITATION

Most posts are likely to appear in either one of these categories. NEWS is usually past event reports; INVITATION is about future events.

NEWS

Every news-worthy item must have this category, apart from information about events (invitations/cancellations). This hooks the item in to the various news feeds and without it the post will be pretty much ignored by the system feeds.

INVITATION (Invitation and Cancellations)

This applies to both forthcoming events where you want ringers to attend, and any cancellations. It puts the item higher up in most news feeds than just general news category.  Full details can be found in this post by RM.

HEADLINES

Any news items in this category will appear on the front page on the right and indeed on every page on the right. So it’s a powerful category! I use it for about 6 to 10 items a week. They go on win-port as the weekly news and also are incorporated in all the other weekly news email and FB posts. All guild event ads and almost all district events get this designation. So do interesting articles!

Detailed post covers making a “headline” post.

GUILD or DISTRICT or TOWER

Reflects who organised an event.  Again this places the news into different feeds. It is rare for more than one of these to be used on a post. TOWER will place the news onto the tower directory page, DISTRICT will place it onto the District Directory page.

Some of the most important news feeds are the District ones – in C&S (and hopefully soon in other districts) these are copied into a weekly email/FB post. the category DISTRICT will push the news to the top of that email so is reserved for events organised for the District Committee.

Typically, a news item about some ringing will be tagged with the Tower’s name and the District’s name as a matter of course.

TOWER name Eg Eling or Basingstoke All Saints
Places the news into the feed either on or beside the tower page.

DISTRICT Name
Eg Alton and Petersfield District
Most news is relevant to one of the Districts.

GUILD
For guild events, this is for any events such as training events or inter districts striking competitions

examples:

  • A district practice at Fawley would be INVITATION, DISTRICT, CHRISTCHURCH AND SOUTHAMPTON DISTRICT, FAWLEY   (and for the first week HEADLINE as well)
  • A practice cancellation at Fawley would be INVITATION, CHRISTCHURCH AND SOUTHAMPTON DISTRICT, FAWLEY, TOWER
  • A Guild Education event at Fawley would be INVITATION, FAWLEY, GUILD, WP GUILD EDUCATION (and for the first week HEADLINE as well)

All 3 would be in C&S’s news feed but would be presented in different places in that news feed. Note the Guild Education event isn’t listed as C&S because it is equally relevant to all the districts. All would be invited.

ARCHIVE

Once something is out of date it should be put into this category. It will no longer be displayed on the current news feeds (not the newer ones anyway. Some of the older news feeds are still to be upgraded to do this.) More details about how to archive here

CONTACTS

These are used on tower pages and District and Guild Officer pages. 99% of these posts are an individual’s contact details. We are working towards having no personal information held on any pages other than these ones – the relevant information being included using display-posts.
They don’t appear on new style news feeds.

District Practice & Hartless Striking competition report

We have had another wonderful district practice and striking competition at Fawley, with over thirty members from across the district joining us. The first hour was for the practice with a mixture of rounds and call changes, various methods, and plan courses and even touches of St Clement’s minor (the special method for the practice).

FeedbackForTheBands-Fawley-2016
Judge providing feedback to the bands

The remainder of the afternoon was taken up with the Hartless Shield Striking Competition. There were six bands entered this year, including a band formed from the district youths.
As usual the standard of ringing was very high, presenting a nice challenge for our judge Alan Bentley.

With such good ringing the result was very close, but (again) Eling came out on top piping Christchurch in to second place and the District youth into very creditable third place. John Davey, one of the guild officers, presented the winning teams with their certificates, and Eling the Hartless Shield.

By good fortune we even have a recording of the winning ringing by the Eling band. and a link to the Youth Band’s ringing on Youtube

The next practice is scheduled for the Saturday the 23rd of April, with the tower to be confirmed.  If you’ve never been to one I’d strongly recommend you do as they are a wonderful opportunity to ring at another tower, with other people, and maybe something you don’t normally ring.  Hope to see you there.

PS. a very special thank you to David Forder for providing the pictures for use in this post.

Calling for the Terrified (Guild Training)

Please find attached posters and application forms for CALLING FOR THE TERRIFIED which will take place on Saturday 16th April 2016, based at Kingsclere.   This is for anybody who wants to have a go at calling simple call changes, and those who want to move on to calling plain courses or simple touches of doubles methods.   It is intended for ringers of all abilities, from those with no experience at all of calling, to those who have done a little bit and want to be a bit more ambitious.
