Bells’ Adviser for the Diocese of Portsmouth

Following the impending/planned retirement of the current post holder, Hugh Routh, the Portsmouth Diocese seeks a bells’ adviser to assist the Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches (DAC) in advising the Diocesan Chancellor regarding bell repairs and bell projects within the diocese.

A third of the diocesan churches have bells, with 48 towers having three or more bells enabled for full-circle ringing.  Projects range from simple repairs to augmentations and new bells.

This is a volunteer position but out of pocket expenses can be claimed for authorised visits and for attending the annual national diocesan bells’ advisers conference.  Candidates should be experienced ringers with recent knowledge and experience of bell repair work.  An understanding and sympathy of how conservation relates to bell projects would be an advantage.

Details of the position and the code of practice are available here.   For an informal discussion regarding the role please contact David Cain (DAC secretary) on 023 9289 9687 or Email:

Indications of interest (with a CV and details of relevant experience) are sought by the end of February.  It is proposed that the newly appointed adviser would work alongside the current post holder for an initial six month period.
