The Isle of Wight District held the annual competition for the Lester Bailey Memorial Shield for Call Changes at St Andrew’s Church, Chale, yesterday (Saturday).
This competition is held annually in June in memory of Godshill ringer Lester Bailey and is awarded to teams for 6-bell call changing on the Island.
Six teams entered the competition for a very enjoyable afternoon’s ringing.
Island Master Jenny Brudenell decided to judge the competition herself for the first time as there had been problems with finding a judge to do the honours.
Results were as follows: 1st Chale, 31 faults; 2nd Brighstone, 34.5 faults; 3rd Ryde, 57.5 faults; 4th Swanlin (a combined Swanmore and Shanklin team), 61 faults; 5th Newchurch, 64 faults; 6th Brading, 76 faults.
Chale band consisted of Paul Miller (caller), Sue Day, John Stock, Catherine Miller, Clarissia Turton and Mary Tester, in rope order.
The competition rules state that ringing of call changes should be of ‘a minimum of 5 minutes’, but Paul’s enthusiasm for the superb ringing got the better of him and we ended up doing 10!
Our thanks to Chale for organising the teas and hosting the afternoon and to Jenny on the superb job of judging – job for life now I feel!
